The Department of Applied Economics was formed in the year 1979 under the faculty of Social Science. Since its inception, the Department has strived towards enhancing the quality of higher education in the field of Applied Economics. The courses offered by the department include M.A. Applied Economics, M.Phil. Applied Economics and PhD. The department has conferred PhD degree to 132 scholars since its establishment. The faculty of the department has had international recognition through fellowship and awards at foreign institutions. The department features one of the best library facilities, with more than 14,000 books, national and international journal subscriptions and bounded volumes of journals and reports dating back to the early 1980s.

To become a Centre of Excellence economics by moulding youth to socially committed professionals and economists imparting applied knowledge of economics, conducting research for policy-making and industry.
